Google Search Still Powers Traffic and Leads, Even as AI Grows

There is no question that AI is changing how people discover information. AI Overviews, chat-based search tools, and large language models are becoming more visible in search experiences and marketing discussions.

However, visibility does not equal volume.

For most businesses, Google remains the single largest source of website traffic and conversions. While AI-driven discovery is growing, it currently represents a small percentage of overall sessions and leads compared to Google organic and paid search.

The risk for many businesses is not ignoring AI, but shifting focus away from the channels that are still delivering consistent results today.

Google remains the dominant traffic and conversion channel

Across industries, Google continues to drive the majority of qualified traffic. Whether users arrive through organic listings, paid search, local results, or Shopping ads, Google remains the primary gateway between intent and action.

What we see consistently across client accounts is this:

  • Google delivers the highest volume of high-intent traffic
  • Google traffic converts at a higher rate than most other channels
  • SEO and Google Ads continue to support each other when aligned

AI tools are often used earlier in the research phase. Google, however, is still where users go when they are ready to compare options, book a service, request a quote, or make a purchase.

That behaviour has not changed.

SEO fundamentals still produce measurable results

With so much attention on AI optimisation, it is easy to overlook basic SEO improvements that still move rankings, clicks, and conversions.

We continue to see strong performance gains from:

  • Improving title tags and meta descriptions
  • Aligning page content with actual search intent
  • Fixing internal linking and crawl issues
  • Updating outdated pages instead of creating unnecessary new ones

These changes are not complex, but they are effective. In many cases, small on-page updates produce faster and more reliable results than experimental AI-focused tactics.

SEO fundamentals remain one of the most cost-effective ways to improve visibility and conversion performance over time.

Content quality and authority continue to win

AI has increased the volume of content online, but it has not changed what ranks well.

Pages that perform best in Google still demonstrate:

  • Clear expertise and topical focus
  • Up-to-date, well-structured content
  • Alignment with user questions and expectations
  • Authority built through consistency and relevance

Publishing stronger, more useful content on established topics continues to outperform thin or generic pages. When content is refreshed, expanded, and supported by a technically sound website, Google still rewards it with visibility.

AI may influence how users discover content, but Google still decides what earns sustained traffic.

User experience is still where conversions happen

No matter how users arrive at a website, conversions still happen on the site itself.

A clear user journey remains essential:

  • Fast load times
  • Mobile-friendly design
  • Simple navigation
  • Clear calls to action
  • Trust signals that reduce friction

AI does not replace these fundamentals. Even if discovery begins elsewhere, users still rely on websites to evaluate credibility and take action. Businesses that continue to invest in user experience and conversion optimisation consistently outperform those waiting for AI to replace the funnel.

Google is still the foundation, AI is the layer

AI search is evolving, and it should be monitored. Understanding how AI Overviews and chat-based tools reference content is important for long-term strategy.

But the data today is clear.

Google remains the #1 traffic and conversion tool for most businesses. SEO fundamentals still deliver results. High-quality content still wins. User experience still drives conversions.

The most effective strategy is not choosing between Google and AI. It is strengthening the foundation while preparing for what comes next.
